But newsrooms need resources to create reliable news that is accessible and free from influence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/topics\/trust-media-and-democracy\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/topics\/trust-media-and-democracy\/\">2017,<\/a> Gallup and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation have studied public opinion on the news media\u2019s role in American democracy, with a focus on Americans\u2019 expectations and evaluations of the news in delivering on its civic function of informing the public.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>In this report, Gallup and Knight turned their focus to American views on how the news should be sustained. The research underscores the urgency of developing revenue models that will support trustworthy journalism today.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">EXECUTIVE SUMMARY<\/h2>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<ul><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><strong>Most Americans believe news organizations prioritize their own business needs &#8211; over serving the public interest:<\/strong> More than three in four say news organizations are first and foremost motivated by their own financial interests, while just 12% of Americans say news outlets act as civic institutions first.<em> <\/em><\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2092\" height=\"1119\" src=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Figure1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-335226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Figure1-1.png 2092w, https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Figure1-1.png?resize=768,411 768w, https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Figure1-1.png?resize=1536,822 1536w, https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Figure1-1.png?resize=2048,1095 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2092px) 100vw, 2092px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<ul><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><strong>Despite Americans\u2019 emphasis on the media\u2019s commercial nature, seven in 10 Americans say they have never paid for news<\/strong>. In addition, only 17% of Americans said they would pay to access news in the future.<em> <\/em><\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1659\" height=\"881\" src=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Figure12.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-335227\" class=\"rich-text\">\n<ul><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><strong>More than half (52%) believe advertising should be a news organization\u2019s largest revenue source,<\/strong> even though digital ad revenue fails to cover the losses many news organizations are seeing from other revenue streams.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1897px) 100vw, 1897px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<ul><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><strong>Americans, particularly Gen Z and millennials, do show an openness to public funding and reliance on private donations as a way to support the news. <\/strong>More than half of Americans are open to government funding and private donations for news organizations to ensure the news is free for everyone, under certain conditions.<em> <\/em><\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img class=\"rich-text\">\n<ul><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<li><strong>Events and newsletters could be a promising revenue source<\/strong>: 35% of Americans saying it is reasonable for news organizations to charge people for in-person events and an additional 20% saying \u201cit depends.\u201d Twenty-seven percent say it\u2019s reasonable to charge for newsletters, and 23% for exclusive content.<\/li>\n<\/div><\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2094\" height=\"2094\"
