Here\u2019s why it should be."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>Macon is trending.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>In August alone, Forbes published a detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/katiechang\/2022\/08\/16\/a-weekend-guide-to-macon-one-of-the-souths-best-kept-secrets\/?sh=773cfff4effe\">weekend guide<\/a> of the city, concluding that Macon is \u201cone of the South\u2019s best kept secrets,\u201d and after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/atlanta\/2022\/08\/26\/macon-georgia-fun-midsized-city\">spotlighting<\/a> great local sites and initiatives, Axios determined that Macon is \u201cactually cool.\u201d Earlier in the year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/experience\/america\/national-parks\/2022\/02\/14\/ocmulgee-mounds-national-historical-park-muscogee-nation-land\/6781815001\/\">USA Today<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2022\/02\/12\/oklahomas-muscogee-creek-nation-is-seeking-create-first-national-park-georgia\/\">The Washington Post<\/a> respectively covered expansion of the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park boundary and potential upgrade of the Park\u2019s designation to a national park and preserve (Georgia\u2019s first). Kudos to the journalists\u00a0and local partners like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maconga.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Visit Macon<\/a>\u00a0who are helping shed more light on Macon\u2019s story \u2014 as a long term Macon Believer, I can\u2019t even begin to express just how exciting this is!<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>Knight Foundation has believed in Macon for decades. I\u2019m humbled to work alongside Beverly Knight Olson, daughter of Knight co-founder James L. Knight, while continuing the good work of my predecessor Beverly Blake, and see firsthand, the power of putting residents at the center of the decision-making process for their community. That\u2019s why we\u2019re so delighted about the well-deserved recognition of our community\u2019s progress. Here\u2019s just a snippet of why we believe Macon is so special:<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p><strong>An unmatched spirit of collaboration and planning&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>In Macon, we take pride in working together to achieve big things. Knight has been strategically working with philanthropies, organizations, residents and other community partners on a long-term plan to boost economic development, bring life to downtown and improve public spaces and parks that are welcoming for all.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<ul><li>Our investments are centered around the implementation of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maconactionplan.com\/\">Macon Action Plan (MAP)<\/a>, a community-informed roadmap for guiding the development of Macon\u2019s urban core. The Plan also receives generous support from the Peyton Anderson Foundation, and is made possible by the hard work of the Macon-Bibb Urban Development Authority, Macon-Bibb County, NewTown Macon, Community Foundation of Central Georgia and many other partners. It has helped draw over $260 million private and public investment to the urban core.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Knight is particularly proud of the $87M<strong> <\/strong>state-of-the-art Beverly Knight Olson Children\u2019s Hospital, opened in<strong> <\/strong>February 2019, &nbsp;and serves as an anchor of downtown\u2019s medical corridor.<\/li><li>Since 2000, Knight has invested over $6 million to revitalize Beall\u2019s Hill. Most recently, through a $1.6M collaboration with Macon Bibb, we\u2019ve committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/wgxa.tv\/news\/local\/new-downtown-macon-homes-to-bring-diversity-inclusiveness-to-bealls-hill\">increase affordable housing<\/a> in the neighborhood.&nbsp;<\/li><li>In addition to all-things-downtown, NewTown Macon is also responsible for the Knight-supported <a href=\"https:\/\/newtownmacon.com\/building-businesses\/downtown-diversity-initiative\/#:~:text=The%20Downtown%20Diversity%20Initiative%20is,from%20the%20local%20business%20community.\">Downtown Diversity Initiative<\/a>. The program trains entrepreneurs on everything from developing business plans to marketing tools with the ultimate goal of diversifying downtown business ownership. The organization also leverages Knight support for its Godsey Initiatives Fund &#8211; providing access to capital alongside robust coaching expertise.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Mercer University has been a long term, invaluable partner in our community.&nbsp; In addition to our original collaboration in <a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/features\/maconmagic\/\">College Hill<\/a>, we have more recently teamed up for the <a href=\"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/press\/releases\/macon-telegraph-mercer-u-and-public-radio\/\">Center for Collaborative Journalism at Mercer University<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/capricorn.mercer.edu\/\">Mercer Music At Capricorn<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anightofgeorgiamusic.com\/\">A Night of Georgia Music<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p><strong>Tapping in to a rich culture<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>In Macon, we leverage our rich cultural heritage as a launchpad for a new generation with new ideas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<ul><li>The Otis Redding Foundation, run by Queen Zelma, Karla and other members of the family, is all about equipping the next generation of Macon musicians. (<em>Check out <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/17\/us\/otis-redding-zelma-macon-georgia.html\"><em>this spotlight <\/em><\/a><em>from The New York Times earlier this year<\/em>.)<\/li><li>Mercer University revitalized the historic Capricorn Studios, now serving not only as a museum but as an incubator for new, emerging and established talent.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Knight has been a steadfast supporter of the Ocmulgee National Park and Preserve Initiative and specifically invested in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npca.org\/resources\/3189-diamond-in-the-rough?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjbyYBhCdARIsAArC6LLKAOaIQqKXebePthpENUn8tAYCUu_7TGeAr4jE-wShdN_kZePWLXcaAunPEALw_wcB\">an expert analysis<\/a> to raise awareness on the regional economic benefits of an upgrade to National Park and Preserve status.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\"
