{"id":135147,"date":"1969-07-12T07:12:46","date_gmt":"1969-07-12T11:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/articles\/the-philosophy-of-the-knight-newspapers"},"modified":"2019-11-11T13:07:04","modified_gmt":"2019-11-11T18:07:04","slug":"philosophy-knight-newspapers","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/knightfoundation.org\/articles\/philosophy-knight-newspapers\/","title":{"rendered":"The Philosophy of the Knight Newspapers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tPHILOSOPHY OF THE KNIGHT NEWSPAPERS<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tPhilosophy, broadly construed, is the love of wisdom.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tIn application, it is the science which investigates general facts and principles of&nbsp;reality and of human nature and conduct.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tAs it pertains to journalism, philosophy embraces the general principles in a speci\ufb01c&nbsp;\ufb01eld of knowledge and dedication to a particular system of ethics.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tThe Knight philosophy of newspaper publishing, as evolved through the years,&nbsp;centers upon these basic points:<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\t1. The Knight newspapers strive to meet the highest standards of journalism. We try&nbsp;to keep our news columns factual and unbiased, reserving our opinions for the editorial&nbsp;pages, where they belong.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\t2. Knight newspapers have no entangling alliances. We are not beholden to any&nbsp;political party, faction or special interest.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tOur editors and of\ufb01cers studiously avoid con\ufb02icts of interest. I and my associates&nbsp;serve on no corporate boards or committees other than appropriate civic organizations or&nbsp;committees in the \ufb01elds of education and communications.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\t3. It is our publishing judgment that business and general managers should conduct&nbsp;the managerial functions of our newspaper group; that the editors are responsible for the&nbsp;news, feature and editorial quality.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tFor newspapermen come in many molds. Some are distinguished editors, writers&nbsp;and photographers, others are superlative salesmen, talented circulation men and ef\ufb01cient&nbsp;production experts.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tStill others, but not so many, have the genius of general management &#8212; sometimes&nbsp;described by Jim Knight as the \u201cnuts and bolts\u201d department.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tWorking as a team, the aforementioned and their co-workers accomplish the daily&nbsp;miracle of turning raw newsprint into the printed product which is sold and distributed in&nbsp;every 24-hour cycle of the year.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\t4. We believe in pro\ufb01tability and its achievement through ef\ufb01cient production and&nbsp;modern business procedures.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tBut we do not sacri\ufb01ce the quality of our newspapers on the altar of the counting&nbsp;house.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tThe \u201cunpopular\u201d stands taken by newspapers are often the reasons for their preeminence in the \ufb01eld of journalism.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tThe truly distinguished newspapers in this country are those which have dared to&nbsp;face public wrath and displeasure.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tWe endeavor to be diligent in the areas of general management, future planning and&nbsp;in holding high the torch of vigilant, independent journalism.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tAs responsible purveyors of information and opinion, we are committed to the&nbsp;philosophy that journalism is likewise a public trust, an institution which serves, protects&nbsp;and advances the public welfare.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tThe Knight newspapers have a deep and abiding faith in our rich heritage of precious&nbsp;freedoms which can be preserved only to the degree that the public is at all times fully&nbsp;informed of the forces which seek to destroy them.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tFew things are impossible to diligence, understanding and skill.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tThus we seek to bestir the people into an awareness of their own condition, provide&nbsp;inspiration for their thoughts and rouse them to pursue their true interests.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>\n\tJOHN S.
